Composable commerce

An architectural approach that assembles an ecommerce platform from independent, best-of-breed components, such as separate search, checkout, and content services, connected through APIs rather than bought as a single bundled system.

Composable commerce promises flexibility: swap out a single component, like search or personalization, without replacing the entire platform. In practice, Master B2B’s reporting has tracked a maturing view of the approach. As all-in-one platforms have added more native capability, and as practitioners have reported real implementation difficulty stitching many vendors together, the case for composability has become more situational than universal. The decision tends to come down to how differentiated a company’s needs are in a specific area. A business with a standard catalog and standard checkout gains little from composing five vendors together; a business with a truly unusual product configuration or pricing model may need the flexibility composability provides.
