Headless commerce

An architecture that separates the front-end presentation layer of a website from the back-end commerce engine, letting a company build a custom buying experience on top of standard commerce infrastructure.

Headless is closely related to composable commerce, but specifically addresses the presentation layer. By decoupling the front end, a company can build the exact buyer experience it wants, across web, mobile, or even in-store kiosks, without being limited to a platform’s built-in templates. Master B2B’s practitioner debate on the topic weighed that flexibility and future-proofing against the real cost: added complexity, a larger internal or agency team to maintain the front end, and a longer implementation timeline. For B2B companies with unusual configuration, quoting, or account-based buying needs, that trade-off is often worth it. For companies whose buying experience is fairly standard, a traditional platform’s built-in front end is usually faster and cheaper to run.
